Authors In Priority Schools Program

Formed in 1963, the Australian Society of Authors (ASA) is the peak professional association for Australia’s literary creators and illustrators, representing approximately 3,000 members nation-wide.

The Authors in Priority Schools program will boost literacy through a specific focus on developing writing skills. The Authors in Priority Schools program was first piloted in twelve schools in 2008 and offered students in Priority Schools the opportunity to be assisted by, learn from and work in depth with a number of well known and successfully published Australian writers. The authors represent a professional group of dedicated, highly motivated and effective communicators. ASA authors attached to the Priority Schools base their work on a student, teacher and school-friendly approach.

Program aims

The program aims to boost students’ writing skills, engagement and enjoyment, to raise ambitions and expectations and to involve communities in the creative writing process.

Program operations

The program includes authors conducting 6 – 10 week writing and creative literacy courses that:

  • cover a wide range of aspects of the writing process, utilising the understanding and skills base of the professional author
  • are available to whole classes or to other groups identified by individual school contexts
  • are available for all school years from pre-literate to HSC
  • provide creative role models
  • help students find and realise their creative and expressive goals
  • significantly improve their literacy standard, through writing.

Community engagement

At the conclusion of the course a community celebration will be held, also providing students with an opportunity to read their work out to an audience of peers and invited parents/community members.

Outcomes for students

Students participating in the course can expect:

  • improved writing skills and confidence
  • enthusiasm for writing
  • reduced blank page fear
  • increased narrative skills in building settings, events and characters
  • expand vocabularies
  • opening up of personal ambitions in writing and for authorship
  • self pride in their work.

Outcomes for teachers

In addition to student and community benefit, Authors in Priority Schools offers informal and formal professional development, through in-class modelling and also through more specialised author-run teaching/writing courses for teachers, if requested.
