Holiday Reading is RAD - Supporting students from Low SES School
Communities with reading
|
Holiday Reading is Rad has proven to be a highly successful strategy for maintaining students’ reading skills over the long holiday break.
Research evidence indicates that students from low socio-economic status communities improve in reading about as much as students from high socio-economic status communities over the school year.
What makes the difference from year to year is that students from high socio-economic status communities retain more of this improvement over the holidays than do students from low socio-economic status communities.
Holiday Reading is Rad has proven to be a highly successful strategy for maintaining reading skills of students from Kindergarten to Year 6 in Priority Schools over the long holiday break.
In 2008-2009, more than 20,000 students participated. Of these students, 96 per cent either maintained or improved their reading levels over the summer holidays.
The aim of the Holiday Reading is Rad program is to encourage adults to read with children each day of the holidays to prevent summer fall-off in reading skills.
In 2009-2010 the program is being expanded. All Priority Schools as well as those identified in 2009 for the Low SES School Communities and Literacy and Numeracy National Partnerships are invited to participate.
Each participating student will receive a reading kit which includes:
Support materials, including translated enrolment forms and information for parents will be available soon.
In 2009-2010 eligible schools can participate at a cost of $4 (GST inclusive) per student.
