About Make it reel summer school 2010
Priority Schools Programs in partnership with the University of Technology, Sydney invites Sydney metropolitan Priority Schools to participate in the Make it reel summer school 2010.
The summer school will be an opportunity for Year 9 and 10 students to experience a university environment and improve their literacy skills through making short films.
Staff from the UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, supported by secondary school teachers and tertiary students will deliver a cineliteracy unit utilising, among other resources, the Priority Schools Programs resource Cineliteracy: more than making movies.
How to apply
The school principal has received promotional material which includes a letter, information about the inpUTS access scheme and a poster.
Interested Years 9 and 10 students attending Priority Schools can apply and will need to complete an application form with support from a designated teacher.

Applications open on 15 September 2009 and close on 17 October 2009.
Selection process
Thirty students only will be chosen from metropolitan Sydney Priority Schools for participation in the summer school.
Selection of applications will depend on the ability to commit to attend UTS for 13 days (week one: 3 days, week two: 5 days and week three: 5 days) during the January school holidays from 6 to 22 January 2010.
Attendance will include participating in the film festival and graduation on Friday 22 January 2010. The graduation will take place in the evening of 22 January 2010.
Students need to enjoy teamwork and the challenge of learning new skills as these qualities will be an important consideration in the selection process.
Who should apply for the summer school?
Students in year 9 and 10 who have the potential to succeed at further study but who may lack role models or support to help them achieve this goal are encouraged to apply.
They should be one of the following:
- students who have the potential to attend university but need to improve their literacy skills or motivation to study
- students who would be the first in their family to complete the HSC and/or attend university
- Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students.
Permission notes will be required as well as the support of the school principal. These will be provided to the school once the successful applicants have been confirmed.
What's in it for students?
Participating students from Priority Schools will:
- attend an orientation day at the University of Technology, Sydney on Tuesday 1 December 2009. This will be an opportunity for students to gain further information and become familiar with the university campus.
- receive financial support with travel to and from the University of Technology, Sydney each day of the January summer school and will be provided with morning tea and lunch
- work with students from other schools and learn about how to make a film
- participate in a film festival where student films will be showcased
- gain a certificate on completion of the course and a statement of learning matched to syllabus outcomes
- receive $300 as remuneration in lieu of holiday earnings on successful completion of the course.
